America First?

If you're a Republican voter, you probably like the phrase "America First". It sounds strong and tough -- like we're gonna take care of business right here at home before we traipse around the world, handing out money to people who don't need the support, and who probably don't even like us all that much.

Well, recently I started to think about it: What does "America First" mean, exactly? It must mean something because Jessica Steinmann uses the term many, many times in her speeches and on her website.

Maybe it's a kind of dog whistle that gets her people riled up. If that includes you -- if YOU feel the need to hoot and holler when you hear those words -- then let me ask a few questions:

  1. Is it "America First" to start an unprovoked war with another country... just because a third country asked us to get involved?

  1. Is it "America First" to tell voters that you will NOT start a foreign war, and then start one anyway once you're in office?

  1. Is it "America First" to spend AT LEAST $29 billion to date on that war, after excoriating your political opponent for being a "tax and spend lunatic"?

You get the picture.

Apparently, though, Lawyer Steinmann does NOT get that same picture. She can't wait to tell you that Trump supports HER in the upcoming race.

Think about that the next time you fill up your tank. Consider it the next time you pay for a meal at your favorite restaurant. Remember it when your young son or daughter tells you the job market is at a dead standstill.

As a political slogan, the term "America First" is a dud. It reminds us of what we've lost, and must therefore be a painful embarrassment for Laura's opponent.
